Every year, World Mental Health Day is marked on 10 October. It’s a chance to raise awareness about mental health and wellbeing, encourage conversations, and remind ourselves that support is available.
This year’s theme is “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies”. It highlights how important it is for people to be able to protect their mental health in times of crisis and global instability.
Why it matters
Mental health affects how we think, feel and behave in our daily lives. Many of us will experience challenges with our mental wellbeing at some point – whether it’s stress, anxiety, low mood, or the impact of life events. Talking about mental health helps break down stigma and makes it easier for people to seek help when they need it.
Local support
In our community, there are services and groups ready to listen and offer support:
- Mind and other local organisations – offering advice, counselling, and peer support.
- Social Prescribers – can connect you with local groups, activities, and resources to help improve your wellbeing.
- Mental Health Team – our mental health team is made up of specialists like Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Wellbeing Advisors and Pharmacists.
- Andy’s Man Club – peer support for men to talk about mental health with no judgement.
- KOOTH – online support, tools and counselling for 10-25 year olds.
If you’re finding things difficult, please don’t wait until you feel overwhelmed – reaching out early can make a real difference.
Looking after your mental wellbeing
Here are a few small steps that can help support your mental health day to day:
- Stay connected – talk to friends, family, or join a community group.
- Keep active – even a short walk can lift your mood.
- Rest well – good sleep supports both mind and body.
- Reach out – if you’re struggling, don’t be afraid to ask for help.
On World Mental Health Day, let’s take a moment to check in with ourselves and with those around us. A simple conversation can be the first step towards better wellbeing.
